hi everybody this is real march weather here today, thunder, sunshine, and for just a few minutes you couldn't see anything outside it was snowing so hard and we got a inch of snow, now the sky is blue, we are only a week from spring and the saying is true, march comes in like a lamb and goes out like a lion, the snow is already melting, i don't remember ever seeing a snow coming and going this fast, if it had kept up we would have had a really deep snow. it looks odd for the easter flowers that are up covered almost with the snow. years ago i planted them in the yard at the old home place and every year they come back up they have to be a very strong plant to survive after so many years. they even survived after all the apple trees we had in the yard have died out, we had one huge apple tree in our yard and people would come with big sacks and fill them up with the apples they were so many of them, in the front yard we had a winter apple tree and they were so hard that you had to take a knife and cut them but they had a really good taste, that tree is still standing after all these years but the apples are not any good, they are very small, and still as hard as a rock. these are good memories of many years ago. everybody make this a good day, don't waste it with bad thoughts and memories, try to think of the good times, your day will be much better.
hi everybody it is a pretty day, a little cool, but better than snow. two more days until valentine's day, this sure was a special day when we were going to school, we always had a party to look forward too, also one of us would get the valentine box, which was a hat box decorated real pretty, i always wanted one but someone else always got it, but it was exciting just thinking you might be the one to get it, we would always count how many cards we would get, we would read them and thinking in our mind that the person that sent it meant they felt that way, which of course they didn't it was just the card that they signed. everybody have a good day.
Sam, thanks for sharing the photo of the school building. The steps leading up the the upper level was the third grade class room. The only time we were ever allowed to use the steps were for fire drills. I remember the houses that were on 400 hill near the cemetery. As I have stated in early posts, I could set on my front porch on 700 hill and see all movement down below at the theater and store, and a clear view of the houses on 400 hill. Also, I had a very good view of the school building. Sometimes my Mom would have me take my Dad's (Lige Williams) diner to him at the coal tipple, and I would have to go inside to where his tool room was and it seemed to me the coal dust was a half inch deep in places, quite a mess. I surely can understand about this thing called "black lung". Fe, keep on keeping on watching over Hardburly. See y'all later, Lord willing.
hi everybody nice 70 degree weather today, it sure feels like spring, hope it stays around. everything is pretty quiet around hardburly today, not much to write about, but that is good, we have had our share of problems this winter, but thank the Lord we got through them. hope everyone can get out and enjoy this nice weather this weekend. talk to everybody later.
good morning all, hope that everyone is well today, i took the morning service off this morning, been up sick through the night, hopefully it was just something that i ate before bed last night. will try to make it in to church this evening. fe, i remember so much that i did as a young boy growing up in Hardburly, i had such a wonderful childhood there. when i come home and visit every year, i have always noticed that i see no kids anywhere, and that totally amazes me, when i lived there you could walk up the road any time through the day and you could see and hear kids everywhere. when i come home now it is almost like a ghost town, it's just so sad, i love to come home for the Homecoming every year because of all the people that are out at the park, makes me remember how it use to be. i still love my home there in the hills but sure wish it was just a little bit more the way it use to be.everyone have a great day and don't forget to always be thankful for it. love and prayers to all--------------sam
hi everybody i hope everybody had a nice weekend. today it was nice but a little too cool to stay outside. sam you are right about not to many kids playing in hardburly, a few but like you said not like when we were growing up. kids would be out until after dark playing, you could hear the moms everywhere hollowing for their kids to come inside the house before it got any darker. one time my dad made us a see saw, we really enjoyed that. my dad was always coming up with new ideas to make things, he made a race car one time and he let me ride out of the hollow with him, the closer we got to the mouth of the hollow the faster it went, to this day i don't think that car had any brakes, i sure enjoyed it but my mom like to have had a heart attack as she watched us going down the hills and around the curves, dad sure got a good talking to when we finally got back home, i don't think it was built to ride up hill seems like we had to walk back home, and we lived almost at the end of the hollow. my dad liked to make home brew and he had a place under the floor for it, in the winter time he would find excuses to go under the floor to cut kinling or anything to get to where his home brew was, with mom keeping a close eye on all his trips. he loved to play his guitar and write songs, he was always busy. he lived to be 85 years old. everybody have a good week. think before you speak, words might come out that is not intended too, once out they can never be recalled.
hi everybody we are getting a lot of rain today, earlier the weatherman said we could be in for some severe weather this afternoon, strong winds and hail and from the looks of the sky it could happen. spring is only 2 days away, sure will be nice when it gets here. everybody enjoy the day.
hi everybody nice sunny day to enjoy, tomorrow is the first day of spring, that is one of the best seasons of the year, time to start planting and making flower beds to enjoy the rest of the summer, i usually end up with more flowers than i have room for but they sure are pretty. used to in the summertime a bunch of us would get our pails and head to the hills to pick blackberries, i have eat lots of blackberry cobbles and jelly that my mom would make with the berries we would pick, she helped us pick them, back then you could find them by the water buckets but now they seem to have just about died out, what you do find is small and dried out. one of my mom's favorite pies was rhubarb, she had a huge plant in the back yard and every year it would come back out, but it is so odd to think about because after she died the plant died also. i never did like rhubarb and to this day i still won't eat it. everybody enjoy the day, be thankful for the sunshine.
hi everybody it has been a cool but nice day and if the forecast is correct we could see some accumulation of snow this weekend. please pray for nancy patrick, she needs our prayers, pray for shirley and larry and arlie and their families also. there will be a memorial service for kenny riley at the tribbey church of God tomorrow at 1pm, please pray for his family. everybody have a good weekend, thank the Lord for what you have.
hi everybody the hardburly lodge is having a easter egg hunt and food at the park today at 1pm.they are really good to the community. at Christmas they have a dinner and give treats out and have different events through the year. it looks like they are going to have a nice day for it. the weather for tomorrow is snow, this is the way march is though, nice one day and tomorrow a different day all together. have a good day everybody. talk to you later.
hi everybody lots of rain today, this will bring new life to the trees and flowers for the spring. tomorrow evening it is supposed to snow from 1 to 3 inches, but we will just wait and see, might not do anything. the stores have their flower seed and veg already in, i was looking at the packets of veg and they are 2.00 for just a small packet. also the bird seed is really costly and the way the birds eat around here they are very expensive to feed, i know that the birds can find their own food, i just like to sit and watch all the different types of birds around the feeder, there is a woodpecker that loves the dogs food, he eats that instead of the seed. i have always heard that the woodpecker is poison if it ever bites you, that and a hummingbird. this friday being good friday if it is not to muddy people plant their beans, i have always heard that this is the day to plant them. sunday being easter sunday probably a lot of people will be traveling, this is an exciting time for the kids, with their new clothes and egg hunts, i know when i was growing up i couldn't wait to put my new dress on and usually a new pair of patent shoes we called them, shiny and with a bow, we would wear them most of the summer. everybody have a good day.
hi everybody the snow is coming down and the wind sure makes it a lot colder. the kids didn't have to go to school today so they are probably glad, i don't blame them that wind sure makes for a rough day to go outside. we used to have a spring out from the house and dad backed it up so he could dip water out of it, many days like this he would have to crack the ice to get his water, it was ice cold when he brought it into the house but it sure tasted good,we tried not to think about the frogs and crawdads maybe found in it, guess some of you remember the hardburly pond that we got our water from, there use to be water hydrants that you could pump water out of also. people would slip around the pond to fish and swim but if they got caught they were in trouble, it didn't stop them though it was fun enough to take a chance. make this day count for something good, tomorrow it will be too late, we can never recall this day again.
hi everybody looks like the snow is over for a while, sure wish it would start to warm up, yesterday it was really cold and the snow was falling hard, i pulled up in the walmart parking lot and parked, i looked under a car parked beside me and there was a little white dog lying there shivering and scared, it was so pitiful, that is one of the cruelest things a person can do is raise a dog up and when it is no longer a puppy to take it away from its home and set it out knowing that it is just going to go hungry and afraid not knowing what it has done to deserve this kind of treatment, i went inside walmarts and got it some food, it ate all of it and started looking for more, i had to leave it there because of the animals i have at home not knowing what they would do to it, i hope that today some kind hearted person has become its new owner, there is just no excuse for this to take place. also where i live a little dog was left behind when the family moved and it just sits there waiting for its owners to come back for it, they had several and took them but left this one behind, if not for the kind hearted people here it would starve to death. everybody have a good evening, and remember it takes the same amount of time to be kind as it does to be cruel.
hi everybody it sure is nice outside today, sure hope it is like this for easter sunday, last night being the first full moon after spring began means sunday is easter, easter sunday always follows the first full moon of spring, that is why easter does not always come on the same date. when i was little the girls always wore easter bonnets or hats, the more flowers on the hats the more we liked them and the fuller the dresses, pink was always my favorite color for easter. most of the day after church we would hide the eggs over and over, sometimes not being able to find all of them, a few days later we would find them all crushed where we had walked over them. all the boiled eggs left over was used for deviled eggs or pickled, any way they sure are good. everybody have a good day.
hi everybody i hope everybody has a nice easter weekend, i saw on the news that a church at hindman walked 21 miles to floyd co today, the pastor of the church was carrying a wooden cross on his shoulder, he said that some people driving by would stop their cars and join them in the walk. willow fern church had a spagetti supper today for anyone who wanted to come and eat with them. knott co has a new judge, govenor brashear appointed him today, he will take office monday. guess the hardburly park will be busy sunday with easter egg hunts. several years ago when dill nucci was still living he would always come to the park to watch the kids and get him some eggs, he lived in the big house next to the church. guido and betty castegnaro lived next to him and joe grigsby and navi lived in the third house. navi worked in the commissary for years, i think she was the book keeper. in the back of the commissary there was a place that they would throw overripe bananas and fruit in, sometimes us kids would sneak up there on our way to school or back and get the bananas and eat them. i can remember when bunny bread started delivering bread there that they had someone dressed in a bunny suit and we kids thought it was for real, when you are small you will believe almost anything. everybody have a good weekend.
hi everybody i hope everyone had a good easter weekend. today i went back to walmart's and checked to see if the little white dog was still there, it was so i went inside and got it some food and i had some water in the car so i fed it and gave it the water. while there feeding it a lady drove by and said that she had just gave it a chicken bone, it didn't act like it was too hungry so i am sure other people are feeding it, but it needs a home of it's own. another lady said that someone pulled in the parking lot in a black van and set a dog out, another black car pulled in and the dog thought that the owners were in that car and tried to get in and in the process it was almost hit, i didn't see it but the lady that gave the white dog some food said that usually a black dog was with it, but then i guess they are better being set out at least they do have a fighting chance to live and get something to eat. i hope no one takes offense to this but the license number of these people should be wrote down and turned in to the humane society. today being april fool's day i pulled a trick on my daughter, i looked out the window and told her that there were several deer outside, she looked and i said april fool, she had not thought about this being a day to trick people, it is all in fun though. the sun keeps wanting to shine, i sure wish it would and warm up so people could work outside. everybody enjoy today, be thankful for what you have.
hi everybody it is a nice but chilly day, just about too cold to do anything outside. yesterday i was walking toward big lots and all of a sudden this young lady stepped out from behind a car, she asked if i wanted to buy a pocketbook cheap that she was trying to get money to get back to leslie co, she said that she had been in the jcpenny parking lot and had her purse in her hand and that a man came by and grabbed it, that is awful to think about, but it will happen if you are not really careful to make sure it is safely in your pocket or whatever, it is a scary thing to lose all your important papers with acct numbers on them, in just a matter of minutes they will be used, always report this as soon as possible to put a stop on anyone being able to use them. but i also thought it was odd that her purse was not in her pocketbook. it is supposed to be in the 70's this weekend that sure sounds good. everybody stay safe.
hi everybody cool and rainy day ahead of us but after this it is going to be nice. while traveling on the hardburly road i have passed several dump trucks coming up this way with dirt and debri in them, i have to wonder who they are working for and where they are taking this stuff to dump it, there are not that many places that i know of up on the mountain to use as a dumping place, they have been doing this for several days now. i know several years ago just below the hardburly pond that a lot of building material was dumped and buried that came from the old buildings in hazard, my brother fought them to the end to stop them from bringing all that old asbestos and materials to hardburly, but no one was willing to help him stop it, so that is buried there which some day will wash right down in the camp. i don't know why this is the first place they head when they need to find a dumping place, probably because no one tries to stop them. billy is gone now but he always said that with the rain and washouts that it was going to come down on the people. he was a smart person and what he said will probably happen. everybody have a nice day.
