hi everybody the sun is shining bright this morning, i am so glad that spring is almost here, seems like when the sun shines and a nice day ahead can put you in a better mood, guess it is because you can get outside and enjoy it. sam i really enjoy the old pictures, i have already found out the names of some of the people that lived in those houses, they bring a lot of memories back. i talked to eunice and she was talking about the blo gum, what we call bubble gum today, said it was the best ever that preacher perdue sold in his store, my sister remembers the porch to the store, said she was so afraid of the big tall man behind the counter, but that didn't stop her from going inside to buy her dope, the name we now call pop. we didn't call it nehi or whatever, it was always called dope to us. our mom's used to go out in the springtime and hunt their greens, they were delicous with soup beans and corn bread, poke was one of our favorites, old field lettece was another one along with planting, the greens are all still here after so many years, if you knew what to look for you could get a whole bag full, but after cooking them they would shrink to about half of what you picked. today is my daughter's birthday, her age now is making me feel really old, but the good Lord has blessed me to live a healthy life that i don't feel that old. every body have a great day, i feel so blessed to have all of you as my friends.
Sam, thanks for sharing the photo of the school building. The steps leading up the the upper level was the third grade class room. The only time we were ever allowed to use the steps were for fire drills. I remember the houses that were on 400 hill near the cemetery. As I have stated in early posts, I could set on my front porch on 700 hill and see all movement down below at the theater and store, and a clear view of the houses on 400 hill. Also, I had a very good view of the school building. Sometimes my Mom would have me take my Dad's (Lige Williams) diner to him at the coal tipple, and I would have to go inside to where his tool room was and it seemed to me the coal dust was a half inch deep in places, quite a mess. I surely can understand about this thing called "black lung". Fe, keep on keeping on watching over Hardburly. See y'all later, Lord willing.
hi everybody i don't think the weather knows what it wants to do,the sun keeps coming out and going back down, we are supposed to get some snow the next few days. another one of our former hardburly residents died this morning, i know a lot of you knew him. brown feltner my neighbor for many years. he loved his church and was there everytime that the doors were open when he was able. he attended the tribbey church of God. his visitation is tomorrow night from 6 to 9, and his funeral will be at 11am thursday at the engle bowling funeral home. please pray for his family. two more days of this month, then we go into windy march. everybody have a good day.
hi everybody raining here, but the northern states in some places will be getting 24" of snow and thousands of people don't have electricity due to the heavy wet snow. sam i was wondering if that school house picture was taken from the side or back of it. i remember that lots of the kids would take their lunch if they had any and go under the floor of the school and eat.some of the kids didn't have any lunch to eat, times were hard then. i can't remember how much it cost to eat in the lunchroom, i can't remember eating there much. mrs mcafee was a teacher there and i remember how nice she always looked, another teacher was mrs crook, for some reason i was always afraid of her, but i can't remember her ever doing anything to me. it seems so odd to be able to remember all these things when we were growing up. every body have a good night, i hope that tomorrow will be a day that we won't have another death in the community, we sure have had a lot in the past year.
hi forum friends, fe that picture of the school was taken at the back of it, i can't remember what year it was supposed to be in. got snow and sleet coming down now, weatherman said about 3 inches in our area.i found a picture of Ed grubbs at the Homecoming back in 2007 will post it. have a safe, warm, and blessed evening everyone.-----------sam

hi sam thanks for the info, that is a good picture of ed. we are supposed to get snow tonight, but they said probably no accumulation, i sure will be glad when all this snow and ice will be through with this year. i wonder if any of the spurlock's are still living that lived in the house on the mountain next to the school, i remember the path that they walked to get home. there used to be a house that sit beside of the school, seems like they were the crase family. everybody have a good day.
hi everybody it sure is cold outside, it is trying to snow. soon it will start to warm up and we will be able to do some outside yard work. some of the schools didn't have school today, the roads are not bad but earlier they might have been. have a good day everybody.
evening all, it was a little warmer here today, still getting a few flurries but no big snow right now. i hear that we are supposed to get more snow and keep the chilly weather for a few more days.i am so ready for spring. hope that all is well in Hardburly and everyone stays warm, GOD BLESS-----------SAM
hi everybody this is a typical march day, snow, sunshine and rain. we set our clocks up march 10th, the way to remember which way to set them is spring forward, and fall back. i always set mine up the night before so i start the day off with the right time. yesterday in the walmart parking lot there was a dog running around, it looked like a dog i have, that looks like a german shepherd, i thought that someone had set it out there because it has been there several days, i called to it and it came to my car, it must have thought i had something to eat for it, it didn't act like it had been mistreated, when i looked at it i knew it wasn't one of the many pups that we had given away that had got grown because it had blue eyes, that is the first time i had ever seen a german shepherd with eyes like that, when it realized i didn't have any food it moved on to some more cars. it was a girl dog. everybody have a good weekend.
hi everybody it has been a rough day for us in tribbey and hardburly today. a power pole caught on fire behind vodie combs house in tribbey and our power went out at 7am this morning, didn't come back on until after 2pm this evening, i am thankful though that no one was hurt. it has snowed all day and been cold, but things could have been rougher. i was watching the news yesterday and they told about this man in tampa florida lying in bed and all of a sudden a sink hole under neath his house just opened up and he went right down into it, his brother was at the house but could not help him. ky is another state known for the sink holes, that is awful to think about. everybody stay warm and safe.
hi forum folks, looks like the forum is pretty quiet except for you and me fe, hopefully everyone else is just taking a break and will come back as strong as ever, we got a little more snow here today but nothing major, lots of cold wind though. i was watching that news broadcast about the sink hole in florida, that would be a scary thing to have happen to you, they said that the sinkhole in that house was about fifty feet deep, thats really scarry. hope that nothing like that happens in kentucky. everyone stay warm and remember----- CHURCH in the morning.God Bless---------sam

good morning everyone sam we got more snow last night too, and it is still snowing, the roads are already melting out, i took some pictures of the snow this morning and will try to put them on the forum. i know it is not right to laugh at others when they fall or something, but i guess i would laugh if someone almost gets killed or does something funny, for one thing that happened was at church, one day some of the people got up to sing, and they got off key, i always sit in the back of the church and the people singing when they messed up would look out the window or any where except where i was sitting, they knew i would be sitting there laughing and it would make them start to laugh, but it was all in fun. one day it was cold and slick and i was walking to church with eunice, we got to the curb down from my house and eunice fell and hit her head hard on the road, i knew she was hurt but i held it back as long as i could and started laughing, she tells everyone if you get hurt and faye is around you are in trouble. not long ago linda went out to feed the birds and she fell over the bank and hurt her self, but all she could think of while lying in the ditch was praying that i wouldn't come by and see her. she is one of my best friends and she knew i would stop to help if i could stop laughing long enough. everybody make this a good day, after it is gone you can never recall it again.
hi everybody another rainy day, we are supposed to get snow tomorrow. we have a bunch of men outside trimming tree limbs away from the power lines, that sure helps by keeping the trees from falling and causing our power to go out. it was out about 8 hrs saturday which makes for a miserable time if you don't have any backup heat. growing up it didn't matter if the power went out, people had coal oil lanterns and coal stoves to keep you warm, the coal cook stoves even had a place on the side of it to heat water. a coffee pot to make coffee on the stove, i can remember mom making it. dad planted peanuts sometimes and they would bake them, i could never touch them, the shells chilled me to the bone and to this day they still do. everybody make this a good day.
hi everybody this has been a rough winter day, feels as if it is trying to sleet outside right now. tomorrow and the next few days are going to be better, temps in the middle 40's. lots of churches are closed tonight, and most schools are closed tomorrow. when we were growing up and we had a snow on the ground, we would sled ride on old tires or anything we could find that we could use as a sled, it was usually cold enough that ice would freeze in water puddles and we would skate on them, there were lots of things to do in the winter. we made snow ice cream, built snow men and snow ball fight. everybody have a good evening.
hi everybody i hope everyone is having a good day, just looking outside and seeing no snow except on the ground can lift your spirits, even my dogs seem happy, they are barking and nothing around them, i always look around when they start to bark to see what is going on. one of my dogs just suddenly appeared here one day years ago, i think he might have been in the woods hunting and got lost, he came to the door and i got him some food, i guess he thought he had found a good home where someone would feed him, another dog from my neighbors had three pups a few years ago, she brought them here and of course she knew i would feed them, they never left except for 2 that went missing a couple of years later. i can't stand the thought of some thing being hungry, whether it is a person or animal. everybody enjoy the day without the snow.
hi everybody glenn tacket a resident of bulan died. he was 72 years old and is survived by his wife nell and 4 children. in the summertime you would see him driving through hardburly camp in his rhino. his visitation will be at the hardburly baptist church tonight after 6pm, and his funeral will be tomorrow at the church at 12pm, he will be buried in the hardburly community cemetery. please pray for his family as they go through this sad time. ed daniels will be in charge of the services.
hi everybody we are in for a nice weekend, in the 50's. time goes up a hour sunday, to give us another hr of light. the kids got another day off from school today, at least they can get outside and enjoy the nice weather. when i was growing up it didn't matter what kind of weather there was you went to school, i can remember walking through snow that was really deep, seems like we don't have snow that deep now and then when it does snow it almost disappears the same day,not like the old days when a snow came it would stay around almost all winter, seasons sure have changed. 12 more days until spring, not that far off. everybody have a nice weekend.
good morning fe, looks like another pretty day here in michigan, hope that you have a nice day coming your way too. i remember the snows that we use to get also , all of us kids use to go out and ride our sleighs and we would ride them until it was so dark that we couldn't see, mother would have to yell and tell us to come in. kids nowadays can't pry themselves away from the tv and video games to come outside and enjoy nature. hope that everyone has a wonderful day, enjoy and be thankful for it.
hi everybody happy birthday to my sister helen, i would tell her age but i will probably not be likely to survive it when she comes in to visit in a few weeks, singing happy birthday to her really early this morning on the phone should be enough with the way i sing. we have had a really nice day today and tomorrow is going to be even nicer. gladys marie owens sholar who was born in hardburly on april 7, 1917 died march 7, her funeral will be tomorrow at the dwarf baptist church at 2pm with visitation from 1 to 2 pm, she will be buried in the owens family cemetery at dwarf ky. please pray for her family. don't forget to set your time up tonight before going to bed. have a good night everybody. be thankful for another day.
