Rachel Combs Allen and her husband George Allen were my great grandparents on my Mother's side. Their son Samuel Allen married Callie Campbell (my grandparents). My mother Elizabeth Allen Harrison was their 8th child. George Allen and several of his brothers fought for the CSA in the Civil War. George survived, though not all of his brothers did. Thsank You for the photo. I'll send it along to my relatives.
Dear Janet, My great grandmother was Susan Allen Garrett. She was the daughter of George and Rachell. She died of Tb and Rachell raised my grandmother as her own child. They lived at the time with Lee Allen. My grandmother was Rachell Garrett Stacy.

Hello Cousin. From what my mother can remember, "Granny Rach" was a wonderful person. She was quite old when mom was young. She commented about the "Damn Radicals" - the Home Guard who raided their farms and killed their men. At least three of the Allen boys were killed returning home from the war near Downing Creek, and are buried near there. It doesn't surprise me that she raised your grandmother as her own.
Hello Cousin, I have heard that she was a wonderfull lady. I was told that she lived to be 104 years old and the reason she died wasnt due to being unhealthy. She died from complications she received after being burned. She went to light her pipe on the heating stove and her dress caught on fire. Imagine the pain she endured. The grandchildren and children tried to take her bandages off real easy afraid of hurting her and she would tell them to get away. She would jerk the bandages off herself, Hide and all.. She was a very strong lady to handle that kind of pain. I also read a story in the Ky Explorer they mentioned her as Aunt Rach saying she delivered babies.

I didn't know how she died or that she was a midwife. Her son Samuel married my grandmother Callie Campbell. Callie was a midwife for many years. People would come for her in the middle of the night. She always went with them to help. We come from a long line of wonderful women.

Bertha is my grandmother she turned 95 this past feb. It is nice to know where she gets her strength from. She is one stubborn ladie and always kept me in line. She married Barter Napier and had five children Rommel, Wavalene, Janice, Ray, and my father Herman. All still residing in rowdy.

Tabby, I just love your grandmother. Her and my grandmother were first cousins. I made her one of these pictures. This is the only one around. Barter was the best man in my grandparent's wedding. Bertha is a wise lady and just a pleasure. She is just like my grandma.

George Allen was the son of Susan and Samuel Allen of Rowdy. Samuel Green was George's brother. HE and George were the only ones to survive the downing creek war. Rachel Combs Allen was the daughter of Alfred and Peggy Combs of Clayhole. Six brothers and sisters in the Allen and Combs family married. There were a bunch of double first cousins.
