hi everybody nothing much going on around here, it has been a nice day to be outside. the 80 degree weather is sure going to be nice this week, looking at the trees they don't seem to be getting that green for this time of the year and the flowers that we buy don't seem to be that pretty, the ones i have looked at seem to be dried up even to the shrubs, maybe they will look better later in the season. everybody have a good night.

hi everybody sam seems like spring is slow coming this year, the trees are just now starting to leaf out, the redbuds are just now starting to bloom, that is our first winter of the spring, we usually have 4 or 5 winters, redbud, dogwood, blackberry, sargus, my sister wants to know if there is a blackberry winter, why there is no raspberry, blueberry or any other berry winter, that is a good question, of course she had to come up with a question like that. one of the former owners of rexall drug died yesterday, elizabeth duncan she and her husband joe ran it for many years, they were the nicest people, joe her husband died a few months ago. rexall had the best food, fresh sandwiches and any kind of dessert made with ice cream, shakes, banana splits, orange ade and lemon ade, all made fresh as they were ordered, i worked there for several years and i enjoyed it, i made so many friends there. everybody have a great weekend.
hi everybody we have had rain and storms for the last several hours but no damage. i heard today that troy hickman is very sick, he used to live here along with the rest of his family. please pray for him, also lydia watts granddaughter evelyn is on the respirator, please pray for her also. the redbuds and dogwood trees are both blooming at the same time so looks like we will have 2 winters together. everybody have a good day.
sorry everybody i haven't posted in a while.. been busy with work, family and things.. hopefully everybody been doing OK around here in hardburly.. glad to see warm weather again where u can get out and sit on the porch.. will everybody have a good weekend and god bless u all..
Hello Hardburly. My dad, Kell Ritchie, worked in the Hardurly mines for over 20 years, starting in the 1930s. We lived over the hill on Cockrells Trace in Knott County. As young kids we walked about two miles to Hardburly to the movies. That was our thing to look forward to so we went over just about every Sunday. My uncle Curt Ritchie worked there until the mines shutdown and later was the postmaster. I believe his daughter still lives in the old company built home where she was raised. I live in Colorado now but visit the old home place every fall and always drive through Hardburly.
hi everybody looks like we are in redbud winter, probably dogwood also since they are both in bloom. howard it is good to hear from you, sure would like to hear some stories that you remember about hardburly. curts's grandson lives in the house that curt lived in at the mouth of groundhog. his daughter lives in airport garden. hope to hear from you again. i have been watching the news today about the manhunt for the boston bomber, one of them was killed but the 19 year old brother is still at large. tweety nice to hear from you. everybody have a nice weekend.
Hi Fe, thanks for giving us all the news from our home-town area. I'm on vacation in the Cleveland area and yesterday I visited Southern gal and Vi....It was a grand reunion. Sure nice to see them both. We could have talked forever I think, but, it was storming and late after the visit so I just went back to Cleveland to settle in for the night. Lake Erie is so nice and alrhough I haven't been fishing yet, It's a must! Just wanted to stop in and say Hi to ALL! Still got another week in Cleveland. Deaser is fine. He will be back on the forum soon...he promised me....Thanks Fe for keeping the forum alive..I have faith it will have a revival soon. Love to all and Prayers.......Louami
Thank you for being a part of my life, whether you were a reason, a season or a lifetime.
hi louami it sure was good to hear from you, it was a surprise to hear about you being in cleveland, glad you got to see sg and vi while you were up that way, we sure miss deaser and all his stories, he sure can tell them, it is good to know he is doing ok, haven't heard from any of his family in a while. troy hickman died wednesday and he was buried yesterday in frankfort, please remember his family when you pray, his brother hoodus is buried in the hardburly cemetery. tuesday one of my neighbors was at the hardburly cemetery and while there she said several people were cleaning the cemetery, it is so good to know that so many people care enough to keep it clean. the oldest tombstone that i found on the cemetery was martha beverly, dated 1916-1923, another older one was cindy arnett, dated 1933-1935, howard zeldon brewer, 1938-1941, he had 3 baby graves next to his that were his siblings. there is a randy noble, dated 1953-1953, and martha noble 1945-1946, there are a lot of unmarked graves there, mostly of babies. a lot of the grubbs family are buried there, ed was the last grubbs buried, he died in march of this year. there is also a gerald godsey dated 1934-1934. everybody enjoy the weekend.
Fe, hope Nancy Patrick is doing well. Should you see her again soon ask her about her Brother, Eugene Knowles. I have tried several ways to reach him, but could not. Gene is a close friend of mine from Bulan from the old days. The last time I seen him was in Whitesburg.
hi lancelot the last i knew anything about eugene he was living in whitesburg. his nephrew larry is on here about everyday, if he reads this he probably will let you know about him, i haven't heard about nancy in a while i hope that she is doing well. lancelot do you remember in the head of ajax hollow a big rock that was called initial rock because so many people carved their initials on it, i was told that when dudley school was still there that they took field trips to it. it was described as being pointed and was flat, sounds a lot like our flat rocks. my sister and i went to the cemetery about 2 weeks ago and decided we were going to try to find them, i don't recommend anyone doing that unless they know exactly where they are going, we made a right coming out of the cemetery and we just kept going, finally we ran into 2 boys beside of the road and asked them which road led to clear creek, the one tried to tell us and the other one said he had lived around here all his life and he and his family got out that sunday with their 4 wheelers, he said they got lost up there and it took them a long time to find their way out, we drove over roads that had big rocks in them and any minute we were looking to lose our car, finally we did make it out to clear creek but i think we were on a road that nobody but us had traveled on for a long time, that will be my last time wanting to explore in those mountains. i think we made a right turn where we were supposed to turn left. looks like dog wood winter has arrived, it is supposed to frost in some areas, guess that is what i get for planting my flowers already. everybody have a good evening.
Hello fe and other Hardbuly folks, Mom is now in a Rehab unit in Ohio, after her stroke she spent 9 days in the hospital before moving her into the rehab unit. She has been in Ohio since 3-19-13 since her stroke, we were in Ohio for my sister-in-laws father's funeral and mom had a massive stroke. With the help of Lord she doing better. I go to Ohio every Friday and stay until Sunday with her. Hopefully, she will be well enough to come home soon. My older brother lives there and the Rehab hospital is only about 5 minutes from his house. Also, my Uncle Eugene moved back to Ohio a couple years ago, His children and Grandchildren wanted them closer, so they decided to go back to Ohio. He and his wife come out and vist mom each day, she has plenty of family there to keep her company, she is homesick and wanting to come back to KY. Everyone continue praying for her God has been so good and I know he can bring her through this.
hello forum family, sorry that i have been absent for a little while, well i am back and it was so nice to see some other people posting other than fe and myself, trena and lancelott, good to hear from you guys, i still am waiting for deaser, sg and would live to see gammaw and roamer pop in on us from time to time, the weather here in michigan is just teasing us with nice spells and then cold spells back and forth, i am beginning to think that we are just going to skip summer and jump right back into winter this year. miss everyone and pray for you all everyday.-------------------sam
hi lwp1062 thanks for letting us know about nancy, i am so glad she is doing ok, hope she gets to come home soon, but sounds like she has a lot of family there with her, i hope lancelot reads your reply, he was wanting to know about eugene. sam thanks for keeping the forum going, there are so many people that likes to read about what is going on. sounds like we are going to be getting rain for the weekend, i sure was looking forward to working in my garden, my neighhor plowed up one for me, i have the best neighbors ever, they are always asking me if i need anything, i sure appreciate them, he even fixed my weedeater for me. the trees are finally green, seems like this was a late spring. we are now in dogbud winter, two down and a couple more to go, but seems like they have not been that cold. another month is almost gone, time seems to fly by anymore. i was watching the news this morning and it showed a elk walking around with a tire around it's neck. a couple of my neighbors said that they had heard a sound like a woman screaming up in the hills, it is some sort of animal, maybe a bobcat or something, it pays to look all around when you go outside, it might be close by and attack you, they said it would stand your hair up it was so loud and scary, it is untelling what kind of creatures are in the woods. my dogs are good for watching out for things around the house, also my neighbors have dogs that keep a watchful eye out for snakes or anything we don't want to be surprised about. everybody have a great weekend. thank the Lord for all your blessings, sometimes we don't even realize how much we are blessed.
Hey LWP1962, trusting you Mom is better and can return home soon. Can you give me Gene's email address or a phonr number that I can talk with him? Does he live near Dayton? If you should talk with him, tell him Redbob was asking about him. Have a good day.
evening forum family, lancelot, good to see ya posting cuz, hope that all is well with you. don't know the new visiting people but they are welcome by me. glad to see that someone is reading our little forum. God Bless everyone and Good night.
hi everybody this is a cool rainy sunday, the wind up of dog wood winter. sam there sre so many people that reads this forum, even though they never post, but that is ok, i am glad for these people and their interest, i was talking to a nice lady yesterday and she said she gets on here and checks for news twice a day, i really enjoy being able to tell what is happening, it keeps everyone informed about hardburly, i sm looking forward to hearing from harold ritchie again, what he has told has been said by so many people, walking to hardburly from knott co going to the theater on the weekends. the boys in hardburly did just the opposite, they would walk from hardburly to lotts creek, picking a watermelon our of someone's garden along the way, i have seen many miners walking a well worn path in muddy hollow walking back home across the hill to their home on lotts creek after a hard day in the mines. i can still remember the taste of the cake that my dad would always bring home to us, after being underground all day the cake would have a different taste to it, probably from the coal and moisture, we ate it anyway, it was a treat to us, we would see him walking up the path to the house and run and grab the bucket from him. i think the cakes were called banana cakes, you hardly ever see them anymore. probably most of you already know that the hardburly pond where we use to get our water and fish is not there anymore, it has been reclaimed, it would have been nice to have thought and took a picture of it years ago, but some things we don't think about until it is too late. everybody enjoy the rest of your weekend, tomorrow starts another work day, but be thankful for health and being able to do what you want too.
