I'm writing a 10 page report on the city of Hazard during the year 1968. I'd like most of the information to be in the particular year, but anything from 1968-1970 is acceptable.
The assignment includes "the good, the bad, and the ugly." I need information on deaths, births, murders, major happenings, etc.
I have included Kennedy visiting Hazard in 1968, and have all the information I need on that subject. I have also included the founding of HCTC, but I would like more information on that if possible.
So, if anyone has ANY information, pictures, articles, etc. from the year 1968, I will appreciate it, and will credit you if recommended.

If you are in the area the best thing would be to go to the Perry Co. Library and look through microfilm of the Hazard Herald newspapers for 1968.

Willie Dawahare was Mayor of Hazard from 1962-69. Then Bill Morton was from 1970-77. From WSGS.com you can click on history and look at pictures and information there. You might want to write wsgs@windstream.net. I think they had a lot of old history items. He might be able to give you some good ideas and direct you to information from the time period you want. The suggestion to go to library if you are in the area is an excellent place to look. Good Luck.

Martha Quigley at Bobby Davis Park Museum on Walnut St. might be a good person to talk to as well. 439-4325. I found this on WSGS history: WSGS (101.1 FM) is a radio station based in Hazard, Kentucky. The station first began broadcasting in the 1950s as the first FM station in the East Kentucky Coal Fields[1] During the 1960s WSGS held the distinction of being the most powerful FM in the state. Today - WSGS broadcasts a 100,000 watt signal and has a greater coverage area than any FM station in Kentucky based on FM Atlas, a national publication. The station was the first in Kentucky to broadcast a Country music format on the FM dial. In the 1960s the "easy listening" format dominated most FM stations in the United States. The station began playing Country Music on a full-time basis in 1968

hazard999, where would I do that? The room with the family genealogy? That's where you did it when the library was downtown. I'm not sure since they have moved into the new building. You could ask at the front desk and they can tell you.
