hi everybody it sure is a nice day, really not to cold. someone hit the lottery at joe's superette for 10 thousand dollars, don't know who it was but they would be wise to keep it quiet. guess most of the schools and government offices will be closed monday for martin luther kings birthday, the time sure has gone by this month, only 14 more days until the groundhog comes out. everybody enjoy the weekend, take time out to be with your family and friends.

good morning everybody tonight is supposed to be the coldest one of the season, hope everyone will take care of their outside pets because they can't take care of themselves and being cold is very painful for them. watching the news early this morning, they were showing the people that were already in the streets in washington, and there were a lot of them. 9 more days of jan and we can look forward to feb, which is pea planting time, last year i planted a row and i had a lot of peas, they are one of the easiest veg to grow, most people don't like them though, my least favorite veg is okra, which a lot of people like. everybody try to stay warm during this cold spell, everyday brings us closer to spring.
hi everybody this has been a bitter cold day, as cold as it is now, it is sure to freeze a lot of water pipes if they haven't been insulated good. the cold temps plus no water makes for a miserable time. i remember growing up that we got our water out of a auger hole on top of the hill, and it only had to get cold and the pipe would freeze, my dad would make many trips up and down the hill until he got it thawed out, same thing for the tv line it was up on the mountain where the antenna was, he would go up the mountain and turn the antenna and by the time he got off of the hill, the antenna would turn on him, up he went again, mostly a lost cause, it didn't take much of a wind to point it in the wrong direction. larry hope everything is going ok for the family in whitesburg. i sure miss isaac, i loved to hear him tell his tales, he could keep your interest in them. i remember him telling one time he went to his hens nest to gather eggs and when he reached in to get them one day a black snake was there instead, he rolled all the way down the hill trying to get away from it. everybody enjoy the evening, be thankful for a warm home.

Wanted to check in and report our cold weather has left us and gone Eastward. Today it is 83 outside so I know what is in store for us a little bit later. I actually enjoyed the few cold days as it reminded me so much of the Winter time when I was growing up.
Hope everyone on the Forum is well, staying warm and now just waiting for Spring. Will be here before we realize it.
Fe all is well in Whiteburg. I too miss dad and his funny story's. He always had something funny to tell. It was 14 degrees while driving to work this morning. I remember in the winter the water would freeze and in the summer it would dry up. I can remember coming to your mom and dad's house and getting water from the well in their yard. Hardburly is always home no matter how long you've been gone. So many memories of growing up and all the fun we had. Now that you are no longer working you and Barb will need to come and visit--mom would love that. I read the forum everyday even though I do not comment much--I not very good at it. I always enjoy reading it everyday and see what's going on at home.
hi lwp1962 it sure is good to hear from you. that story about the well brought back a lot of memories of growing up in the head of muddy hollow. i remember when dad dug the well, he would carry huge rocks to line it with, after digging it he put the top on it and then his bucket and rope, we were always warned about going to close to it, for fear we would fall in, that was the only water we had for many years, there was no indoor water, we would pack it for everything into the house, for cooking, bathing and washing clothes , at first with a scrub board until mom got a wringer washer, she would hang her clothes on a line and in the winter times they would freeze solid before she could get them hung up, she cooked on a coal stove and warmed the house as best as she could with the grates in each room. as the years went on things got a little more easy for her and the other miners wives, billy seen to it that mom had everything made easier for her, him and dad put in a big coal furnace, indoor plumbing, and nice furniture, and of course one of her favorite things was her telephone, which she would spend hours on it talking to her friends, two of them being eva jane arnett and eunice godsey, she enjoyed her soap operas also. i could talk on and on but too much could be boring after a while. this morning it is only 25 degrees and we are supposed to get snow this weekend, everybody stay warm and please be careful, a house burned last night in allais and a woman lost her life. talk to everybody later.
hi everybody the lady that got killed in the allais community house fire was joanne who worked at the circle t restaurant, she was the one who most always waited on us and she was the same every time we went, so nice to everyone. we will miss not seeing her there, that is the reason we should always try to be nice to those we know when we meet them, you never know if we will ever see each other again. it got a little warmer than it was supposed too today, my thermometer showed 40, but they are still talking snow for friday. please pray for carolyn baker runyon's family, she died last thursday, they use to live here in hardburly. it is hard when we lose a family member. everybody say a special prayer for all those that are hurting tonight, no matter what the situation may be, sick, hungry or homeless. it is hard to separate any kind of problems that we may be going through and if we have Jesus on our side it is easier to bear.
hi everybody it's a cold 26 degrees here in hardburly, had to be awful cold on the children going to school this morning, the weathermen talk like we might get snow tomorrow, so they might not have to get out in this cold weather. just 1 more week of january left, but sometimes feb can be a rough month. i used to look forward to feb when i went to school, we would exchange valentines on valentines days and it was so neat to see who you would get one from and what it would say. i would always look to see if i got one from a special someone and i usually did, at that age in grade school we would have parties on special occasions, in the fall we would have a carnival and they sold bags of confetti and we would buy it and throw it everywhere. i always wondered how the people that cleaned up after it could clean it up, it had to be really hard when it fell in corners and everything. i remember the paddle that mr spencer carried with him, if anyone did something they shouldn't they would get a paddling, i was too afraid of that paddle so i stayed away from trouble, but some of the boys didn't and they paid for it. everybody enjoy today.
good morning everybody looking outside this morning the road is covered with snow, probably mixed with sleek, we are being told that if we don't have to be out, stay at home. this weather is supposed to stay around until sometime tonight. walking in walmart's yesterday i ran into my neighbor with her little 2 year old girl, she is so cute, she was eating a chicken nugget, i asked her if i could have a bite, she got the biggest grin on her face and when i looked again, the chicken nugget was gone, i don't know what she did with it, but she wasn't about to share, i got a good laugh out of that, they are so precious at that age. everybody have a good weekend.
hi everybody this has to be the slickest time i have ever seen. if you don't have to be outside, please stay in. i needed to feed my dogs, so i ventured out, i held to my bannister with one hand and the food in the other, i didn't think i could make it back inside. solid ice,the dogs were sliding on the ice while trying to eat, on the scanner the workers are going places and working the road, but before they get out of the hollows it is solid ice again. i know this happened where i live, it is hard to do anything with the sleet until the temps start to go up. please be careful, it is so easy to fall and break a bone or injure yourself.
the ice is still here, be careful when you go outside, it will probably melt later on today, the temperature is supposed to go up. there is a stomach flu going around now that washing your hands or sanitizing them won't stop the spread of it, it is caught from sneezing and coughing, they said the best prevention is to not be around crowds of people, it lasts about 3 days. that is good advice but not everybody is able to avoid being around others that have it. everybody have a good weekend.
hi everybody the freeze is starting to thaw finally. a couple of months ago i told everybody that a sign had been placed on the mountain showing people where to turn off to get to the hardburly cemetery, i was told today that it had been stolen, seems like people who buys scrap metal would know if someone brings a sign in with the name on it that they would know it had been stolen. it is hard to get to the cemetery unless you know where the road is that takes you to it. i was talking to my sister today and we got to talking about the many problems that people face daily. i told her that was like climbing a ladder one step at a time and once you got to the top of it, it was just like another petal on a rose, don't make a lot of sense but that is the way i look at it, that rose just keeps on blooming with each petal we add. i was talking to a friend and he told me growing up that they didn't have indoor plumbing, so his dad rigged up a way for them to take hot showers,he said his dad had a big galvanized tank and he had a water pipe running off the hill to fill it up, when they got ready to shower his dad would start a fire under it, heating the water and it would run on down the hill into the basement and they could take a hot shower when they wanted, now that is a smart person who could think something like that up. happy birthday today to terri, the little chicken nugget friend, she is now a big 2 years old. every body have a good weekend.
good morning everybody the sun sure is bright coming over these pretty mountains this morning. i sure hope it melts all this ice that is covering everything. my neighbor has a four wheeler and when it gets bad, he has a snow blade that he puts on it, and plows the road with it, he worked it yesterday and it looks like with a little help from the sun the road will be alright to travel on today, it is really good to have good neighbors like that and i have them living all around me, we watch out for each other. my dogs barked a lot last night and my daughter don't like it when one of them barks, it sounds like it is howling and she said that is a sign that someone in the neighborhood or close by is going to die, that has been a tale as long as i can remember, and sometimes it does happen, but i don't know if that has anything to do with someone dying, because a dog is always howling and if someone died each time, no one would be left. everybody enjoy this beautiful day, this time next week it will be feb 3, so spring is just around the corner.
hi everybody it is a warm 70 degrees right now, but we are supposed to have bad weather starting tomorrow. all of my spring flowers are already up, i sure hope a cold spell doesn't kill them out, but it is very likely too. i was talking to someone today about going to school and all of a sudden when you were in class, the smell of mrs pendergrass's vaccinations meds floated through the school putting a fear in all of us, she would take those big long syringes with those big needles and jab you good, i could smell the shots long before i had to take mine, making me tremble all the more, i could swear almost that they were at least a inch long or at least i thought they might be. i remember on friday in the school lunchroom that they would have veg soup and peanut butter and syrup sandwiches, i always thought that they would save all the vegs left over through the week and make the soup, anyway it sure was good. i can't remember any of the cooks names but they sure knew how to fix food to make it tasty. sam salyers who was one of my favorite people could always put a smile on your face, he has told me many times that my sister and joyce delong was often put in the position to take names if the teacher had to be out of the room, he said that everytime they would take his name and he wouldn't be doing anything, but i can just see him sitting there with a grin on his face thinking something up to tease them about, he was the same everytime you saw him, he loved to order his garden seeds through the mail every spring, and he would always raise a garden until he was unable too. i sure miss not being able to talk to him. everybody be kind to those you meet and if possible don't do anything to hurt anyone, i for one know the feeling of being treated wrong, but i know that the Lord is the answer for everything and he will take care of the situations himself, when the time is right i am going to tell you why you should never be secure in any job, right now is not the right time. everybody have a good night, watch the weather news to see what is going on.
hi everybody we have a tornado watch out until 1pm today, also a severe thunderstorm warning, right now it is only raining but we just need to take precautions at this time and stay in until everything is clear. i remember a few years ago on main st in hardburly that a strong wind came up the creek beside of the park, blew billy's apple tree over, traveled up on 700 hill and completely blew a building off the hill, it did more damage also, people from other places where driving up main st to look at everything, the funny part about this was that hardburly was the only place that was hit,it was hard to believe, it was even put in the paper, the lex herald had pictures of the damage also in their paper.so this goes to show that no place is safe from destruction. everybody be safe.
hi everybody yesterday winds and rain, today it is snowing but so far not staying on the roads. yesterday going through tribbey the winds had torn part of a roof off on one house causing it to land over the hill, and the tree co had to come to hardburly and work with trees lying on the power lines, getting almost to the mouth of the hollow water was everywhere, it started backing up just before getting to the railroad crossing, it was in the yards and running down the highway, if not for the highway dept it probably would have gotten in some of the houses, we had to wait several minutes until they got the ditches unstopped. two more days until ground hog's day to let us know if we are going to have 6 more weeks of winter, i'm not sure that the groundhog is that smart to predict the weather. years ago my dad wrote a song about a cadillac, having to do with working in the coal mines, he sent the song somewhere, i am not sure who too, but the next thing you knew it was playing on the radio, he never did hear from the person that he sent the song too, so if anybody ever comes up with a good song or invents something, don't let someone else get your ideas without a patent or whatever. everybody have a great day.
